How do you sail across the sea when your ship
is sinking
how do you keep afloat as the icy, cold waters
fill every crevice
every deck and cabin and water-tight compartment flooded
with the mess of this massive ocean tide
spilling over one into the next into the next
into the next until nothing unsinkable remains
welling from some hole in the hull that grew to be more
than just a crack in the rivets of your steel armour
flooding your innards until you buckle outwards
into the abyss
suffocating the life, suffocating the air, suffocating the fire that moves
your motion
defenseless, listless, sinking more
slowly but surely snuffing out the maiden promises
of your journey
how do you sail across the sea when your ship
is sinking
sinking as I speak
sinking as you listen
sinking as we wonder
what is really sinking
sinking to the bottom
surely sinking to the bottom
of the big
deep
icy blue
